Understanding Veterans Benefits

Veteran burial benefits provide military families with financial and logistical support while offering the honor and dignity veterans deserve from their service. Veteran burial benefits come in multiple forms, from allowances to help pay for the burial to cemetery options and military honors.

Who is Eligible for Benefits?

Veterans who served honorably in the U.S. Armed Forces are typically eligible for burial benefits; however, not all veterans qualify for the monetary burial allowance. More information regarding eligibility for this particular benefit can be found below.

Active-duty service members, members of the Selected Reserve, certain eligible family members, and some veterans who served with specific criteria qualify, too.  Eligibility can also include reservists and National Guard members who served full terms or were discharged honorably. Families often need to provide military service documentation, such as the DD-214 form, which proves the individual’s discharge status and service details.

Burial Flag

A United States flag is provided, at no cost, to drape the casket or accompany the urn of a deceased veteran who served honorably in the U.S. Armed Forces, symbolizing the nation's deep gratitude for their service.

Cemetery Options

Veterans and eligible family members can receive burial rights in a VA national cemetery at no cost. This includes the gravesite (burial or niche), opening and closing of the grave, perpetual care, and a government-furnished graveliner. VA national cemeteries offer a serene and respectful resting place, surrounded by others who share a commitment to serving their country.

Headstone or Marker

Whether at a VA or private cemetery, honorably discharged veterans are eligible for a no-cost, personalized marker, headstone or medallion to commemorate their lite and service.

Visit https://www.va.gov/burials-memorials/memorial-items/headstones-markers/ for more information.

Urn or Plaque

A commemorative urn or wall plaque may be requested to honor a cremated Veteran whose remains have NOT been interred. Families may choose either option based on their preference.

Please note that selecting a commemorative urn or plaque permanently forfeits eligibility for interment in a VA national cemetery and for a VA-provided headstone, marker, or medallion in any cemetery. This decision is final and cannot be reversed, so families should consider their choice carefully.

Presidential Memorial Certificate

A Presidential Memorial Certificate (PMC) is a gold-embossed paper certificate bearing the official signature of the President of the United States. It honors the memory of a Veteran and expresses the country's grateful recognition of his or her service in the Armed Forces.
