Obituary

Wayne Garner Hensley, age 82, of Conyers, died at his home, November 1, 2022. He was born in Macon, Georgia, to Cecile and Frank Hensley. Wayne served his country honorably in the U.S. Army between 1959-1966, after graduating from Sylvan Hills High School in Atlanta where he played football. On June 15, 1963, he married the love of his life, Rebecca Reece and they were married almost 60 years. They met, married and retired from Bellsouth Services where Wayne had worked for 38 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lithonia for 56 years, where he was very involved, working with the youth, playing softball with the churches team, decorating for patriotic services, helping his wife decorate the church for Christmas, and ushering. He and his wife were members of the Citizens Sheriff's Academy Alumni Association of Rockdale County. Wayne was a Knifemaker for 50 years, making his first knife in 1973. He was known worldwide for making knives. Wayne was once contacted by a gentleman in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates to come to their country to train its citizens in knife making skills. He declined their offer. For 45 years, he was a member of the 'Knifemakers' Guild'; for 24 years was the longest sitting Board member; and for 14 years was the Vice President. The Knifemakers Guild' was the love in which he was involved, winning multiple awards, many were peer voted awards. Wayne was a charter member of the Chattahoochee Cutlery Club, and charter member of the Georgia Custom Knifemakers' Guild. He was also a member of the Flint River Knife Club, where he was a past president. He was also enjoyed being part of the Rockdale Archery Club. Wayne loved the outdoors; visiting NASCAR races with his wife (attending his last race as recently as March 2022.) His family was very important to him. He was so proud of David and Mark for accomplishing Eagle Scout and later his grandson, Ryan. His grandson, Joshua should be accomplishing this in the near future. Surviving are his loving wife of almost 60 years, Rebecca Hensley, of Conyers, Georgia; sons, David Wayne Hensley and his wife, Laurah, of Covington, Georgia, and Markham Reece Hensley and his wife, Ingrid, of Greenwood, Indiana; grandchildren, Ryan Garner and Garrett Allen Hensley, of Covington, and Joshua DeWitt Hensley of Greenwood, Indiana; sisters-in-law, Inez Reece of Woodstock, Georgia, Ernestine Roberts, of Bowersville, Georgia and Hopey Reece of Carnesville, Georgia; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Bob Lindsay, Dr. Jim Martin and Rev. David Travis will officiate. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3 o'clock prior to service time at the church.
