Virginia House Howard, age 96, of Conyers, died Monday, September 1, 2014. She attended Georgia State College and Atlanta University, Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, and Oglethorpe University where she received her master's degree. She taught first grade and was a reading specialist for 29 years. She met the love of her life, Lyman Davis Howard, two years before World War II. They were married December 25, 1942, and had over 57 years of happiness together.
Virginia filled a multitude of roles with loving care: mother, daughter-in-law, grandmother, aunt, homemaker, cook, candy maker, crafts, worked with cub scouts, little league supporter, Sunday School teacher for younger married couples, worked in Vacation Bible School, Woman's Club, WMU, UMW, and active member of the Kappa Kappa lota Sorority, serving as president for 2 years and treasurer for many years, member of DAR. She served as recording treasurer at Kelly United Methodist Church. Virginia later served as Sunday School Vice President and treasurer of First Baptist Church of Lithonia, and also kept the sanctuary pews in good order.
She was preceded in death by husband, Lyman Howard; parents, Lewis and Sallie House, sister Kathy McClearen; brother, William House. She is survived by son, Joseph Lee Howard and wife Katrena Clabough Howard; grandchildren, Jesse Lee Howard, Heather Laurel Howard and fiance Drew Benton Sparks; nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be held 3 o'clock Friday, September 5, 2014, at the First Baptist Church of Lithonia with Dr. Jim Martin and Rev. Bob Lindsay officiating.
