Thomas Anthony "Tony" Phillips

Thomas Anthony “Tony” Phillips, of Clarkesville, Georgia, passed away October 12, 2026, at the age of 69. He worked in the trucking industry and was employed by Penske for 37 years, retiring as a District Service Manager.

Tony’s love for Christmas and children found its greatest expression in his beloved tradition of playing Santa Claus. He delighted in handing out toys and seeing the joy on children’s faces.  He also owned and operated a Christmas tree farm, and his generous spirit extended throughout the year as he shared candy with others. During the Christmas season alone, he distributed more than 6,000 candy canes, spreading holiday cheer wherever he went!

Tony also had a special place in his heart for creatures in need. He operated a rescue farm, where he spent many hours hand-feeding and caring for animals. As hobbies, he enjoyed fishing, baseball and watching western shows.

Tony was preceded in death by his parents, JW and Shirley Phillips, and his son, Joseph Lee Johnson. Survivors include his lifelong friend and wife of 26 years, Maryjane Phillips; his beloved children, Chris Morgan (Mandy), Christa Spokes, Christy Smith, Anthony Freeman (Meg), and Michael Phillips; his 11 adored grandchildren; his brothers, James R. Phillips, Tim Phillips, and Johnny Phillips (Sandy); his sister, Lynn Phillips Crawford; his special niece and caregiver, Tara Simpson; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

A funeral service will be held 3 o'clock, Monday, October 19, in the chapel of Henry Funeral Home with Preacher Micky Oliver officiating. Interment will follow at Turner Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday, October 18, from 4-6 p.m., at Henry Funeral Home, Lithonia. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may bring a Christmas ornament to honor Tony's love for the Christmas season.

Tony will be remembered for his generous heart, his love for children, and the joy he brought to others, especially through the magic of Christmas.
