Obituary

Sarah Alice Pope, born May 1944 in Lithonia, Georgia, was the second child of Jesse & Sarah Jo Pope. She was loved by both her mother, daddy, her older brother and 2 younger brothers. Fragile yet strong, she loved others and loved being with others, especially her family and extended family. She lived most of her life in Lithonia and Conyers until her move to Jackson, Mississippi to be near her brother and sister-in-law 7 years ago. She passed into a new life on January 5th, 2025. Sarah Alice was a caring sister to her 3 brothers: Gene, Ray, & Marty and loved spending time with her aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was a 1962 graduate of Lithonia High School. Her career at Lithonia Lighting was 34 ½ years, but at the end of 1997 she stepped down from her job to care for her mother, Sarah Jo, who had Alzheimer's disease. She persevered at great sacrifice to her own health until her mother's death in 2006. For 10 years, she lived alone in an apartment in Conyers where many trials came and began to affect her health significantly. Being an avid reader and visits from friends and family kept her going. In late 2017, she was moved to Jackson where she spent the last 7 years at Lakeland Nursing Home. Full of anxiety when she first moved there, she was able to tap into her childhood and young lady Christian roots, remembering the old hymns sung at old First Baptist Church of Lithonia in downtown and the Jesus she loved as a child and youth. Through Bible studies taught by a special lady, Jan, and her personal devotional, Our Daily Bread, she came to have a great peace and joy which she spread through the nursing facility. She cherished regular visits by Marty and Svetlana. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse & Sarah Jo; and her brothers, Gene and Ray Pope. Survivors include her brother, Marty Pope (Svetlana) of Flowood, Mississippi; her sister-in-law, Andrea Pope, of Conyers; nephews, Jeff Pope (Leigh) of Johns Creek, Steve Pope of Decatur, Jesse Pope of Atlanta, and Alek Pope (Laura Grace) of Memphis, Tennessee; as well as lots of extended family across Georgia and the country. She is taking her final journey back to her beloved Lithonia where funeral services will be held 11 o'clock, Monday, January 13 in the Chapel of Henry Home, 6833 Church Street, with Dr. Jim Martin officiating. A brief graveside service will follow at Hillandale Memorial Park, where she will be laid to rest beside her father, mother, and her brother Ray. Visitation will precede the service from 10am to 11am at the funeral home. Please do not feel any obligation to send flowers; just know you were loved.
