Robert (Bobby) L. Deal, 92, of Newborn, Georgia, died peacefully on November 7, 2024, at Haven Memory Care, Athens, where he received wonderful end-of-life care. He was born February 28, 1932, in Savannah, Georgia, the only child of Curtis S. and Mattie Rushing Deal. Bobby was 1949 Savannah High School "Accelerated Group 1" Class graduate where he played football and baseball. He also played second base in the American Legion Baseball League before serving his country. Later in life his real passion was golf -- a love he generously passed down to several generations of his family. Mr. Deal enlisted with the United States Army (June 1949) where he was stationed in Germany during the Korean Conflict. While there he toured playing in Army baseball exhibitions for the troops. Honorably discharged, October 1952, he had attained the rank of Sargeant RA. While working for the Seaboard Coastline Railroad, he attended night classes and graduated from Armstrong State College with a Management degree. In 1963-64, he was elected as President of the Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) in Savannah. Professionally, he moved into management with Sears Roebuck for the balance of his career retiring in 1992. He was a dedicated and long-time member of Newborn Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir, volunteered at their food bank, and delighted in the simple task of changing the church signs. Preceding him in death were his parents; son, Robert (Bubba) L. Deal, Jr.; and beloved wife of 58 years, Charlotte A. Deal. He is survived by his loving daughters and sons-in-law, Dana & Chet Chandler of Marietta, Diane & Jerry Chupp of Newborn; his 4 granddaughters who affectionately called him "Papa" -- Mattie Lou Chandler, Annie (Zack) Goble, Cassie (Parker) Hulme, and Lillie Chupp along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. A memorial service will be held at 3 o'clock, Sunday, November 10, 2024, at Newborn Methodist Church, 118 Church Street, Newborn, with Pastor Todd Hilton officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Sunday, from 2-3 PM, at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Newborn Methodist Church at the above address. Interment will take place with family on a later date at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Savannah, Georgia. Henry Funeral Home, Lithonia, is overseeing arrangements.
