Smith, age 74, of Covington, died February 17, 2017. He served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam war. A member of Belmont Baptist Church, he was passionate about working at the Food Bank. He was known to be a very giving person who would help anyone that he could. Mike enjoyed having fun and was known to be a prankster. He enjoyed fishing, whistling, and spending time with his family. A very loving husband, father, and grandfather, he will be missed dearly. He was preceded in death by his son, Daniel Smith; parents, Daniel and Ethel Smith; sister, Joyce Echols; brothers, Jerry Smith, George Smith, Robert Smith, and Frank Smith. Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Earlene Smith; daughters, Heidi Swafford and her husband, Brian, of Carl, Amy Hardy and her husband, Greg, of Covington, Audrey Leitner and her husband, David, of Conyers, and Andrea Thomas and her husband, James, of Greenville, SC; sister, Emma Jo Crawford of Alabama; grandchildren, Joshua Swafford, Sarah Swafford, Beth Swafford, Kaylee Hardee, Hannah Hardee, Ben Hardee, Jonathan Leitner, Matthew Leitner, and Abbie Thomas. A funeral service will be held 1 o'clock Thursday, February 23, at Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Nolan Jackson officiating. Interment will follow. The family will receive friends 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Monday, February 20 at Belmont Baptist Church.
