Obituary

Martha Martin Wood, age 89, passed peacefully on November 17, 2021, following complications from congestive heart failure. Born July 23, 1932, in Lithonia, she lived most of her life in Georgia, having also lived in Texas, Tennessee, and Delaware during the earlier years. She was an active member of Mt. Carmel Christian Church for many years and, upon moving to the Monroe area, became active in the First Monroe UMC. She was a valued member of the community, participating in many committees at the church as well as in outside organizations like the Lithonia Women's Club and the Monroe Art Guild. She enjoyed traveling with her second husband, James Wood, and they toured much of the continental U.S. as well as Hawaii, Alaska, and Germany. Ms. Wood was a caterer for more than 30 years and will be fondly remembered by many people for the exceptional wedding receptions and events she catered. Her specialty was wedding cakes, and she was known for her famous homemade recipe and for the beautiful decorating she crafted. She also enjoyed giving parties for family and friends and was well regarded for her delicious cooking. Her favorite party was probably Max Cleland's 60th birthday, and the huge six-tier cake she created was truly a work of art. She is preceded in death by her parents, Elijah and Mabel Martin; her brother, Wilbur N. Martin, and husband James L. Wood. She is survived by daughters and their husbands: Lisa and Terry Creedon of Snellville, Lynn and Randy Beacham of Newborn; son and his wife, Stephen and Maria Watson of Lithonia; brother Myron Martin and Hallie Cullen; stepchildren and spouses: Doug and Tina Wood, Carol and Mike Edwards, and Merrie Ellen Wood; grandchildren Courtney and Colin Cannon, Kathleen and Justin Webster, Lindsay and Travis Prather, Lauren Lucille Warburton, Stephen C. Watson, Jr., Melissa Wood, Carrie Leigh Gibson, Shelby Hawkins, Leslie Anne Creedon; nephews Zack and Leigh Martin, Tom and Tina Martin; nieces Melinda and Warren Smith, Julie Martin; eleven great nieces and nephews, and five great grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 3-6pm, Friday afternoon, November 19, at Henry Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held 11 o'clock, Saturday, November 20, at the First United Methodist Church of Monroe, 400 S. Broad St., Monroe, GA 30655, with Senior Minister-Rev. John Purrington, Dr. Dane Wagner and Rev. Zack Martin officiating. The interment will follow at 2:30 at Rock Chapel Historic Cemetery, 1994 Stephenson Road, Lithonia, GA 30058.
