Obituary

It is with profound sadness, great love and sincere appreciation that we share the peaceful passing of Maria Rosario Esparza Morrow on December 10, 2024. Born on May 13 in 1953, Maria lived a full life with a family that she held so dear. She was the very proud mother of two daughters: Maria Regina Davis Keene, and Sonia Amanda Pomerantz (Ross). She adored being the grandmother of four: Matthew Hill (Lexi), Skye Smith (Kendall), Morgan Hill and Maria Phoebe Peyton Keene along with her bonus grandchild, Adara Johnson. She left us knowing that her great grandchild, Shelby is to be joined by another great grandchild, due this April. Born and raised in San Antonio, TX, Maria loved being the oldest of six children: Edward Esparza, Dolores Ramirez, Benito Canales (Virginia), John Rene Esparza, Sr. (Sylvia Ann); Grace Rios Castillo. She also was graced with 14 nieces and nephews, along with many grandnieces and grandnephews. She exhibited her zest for life from a young age. She was confirmed at age 9 at San Fernando Cathedral. She always excelled in school as was evidenced by her inclusion in the National Honor Society at John F. Kennedy High School (Go Rockets!). She was an avid reader who loved football, marching bands, animals (especially turtles), Fiesta in Texas, the Beatles and of course and most of all, her family. In 1972 Maria moved to Atlanta, Georgia where she would raise her daughters. In Georgia she would find the love of her life, Richard Morrow, whom she married in 1994. Together they travelled all over the southeast visiting family and collecting antiques. She relished being active in the Boy Scouts alongside Richard, and eventually relocated with him to Kentucky in 2020. She deeply mourned his passing after more than 25 years of life together on October 4, 2021. She was a winner in every sense as were her favorite teams: the Atlanta Braves and Georgia Bulldogs. That said, her keen memory of the 1990s somehow led her to still believe in her dear Dallas Cowboys. Knowing her meant you weren't surprised that she, a non-runner in everyone's eyes, would capture third place in her age group, participating in a 5K at age 60. Although family was always first, her career was important to her. It included 30 years working in telecommunications with Southern Bell which would later become Bell South and eventually AT&T. She proudly unretired to have a second successful career, this time at Avantor Sciences, working as an order specialist for over 12 years before her passing. A devoted member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Columbia, KY, Maria left this earthly life in peace. She would want us to face her passing with love, a sense of calm and a commitment to always leading with kindness and joy. A Memorial Service/Celebration of Life for Maria will be held on Saturday, December 14th from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Bay Creek Community House (3599 Bay Creek Church Road, Loganville, GA 30052). This will be a very casual event. On Monday, December 23rd, there will be a full Catholic service with burial in San Antonio, TX. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Castillo Funeral Home (520 N. General McMullen Drive, San Antonio, TX 78228). Service with Mass to be held at St. Dominic Catholic Church (5919 Ingram Rd, San Antonio, TX 78228). Burial to follow at Resurrection Cemetery at Cordi-Marian, San Antonio, TX. Local arrangements entrusted to Henry Funeral Home, Lithonia.
