Graveside Service: Saturday, February 18, 2017 Place: Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery Visitation: 11 - 12 Saturday morning Place: Henry Funeral Home, Lithonia James Thomas (JT) Young, Jr., 90, died Thursday, Feb 9. in Charlotte, NC. He leaves his wife of 69 years, Ethel Belle Morgan Young, four children, David Thomas Young (Gloria), Susan Young Huckaby (Rob), Brenda Carol Young, Jeffrey Morgan Young (Beverly); 11 grandchildren, Brent Huckaby, Morgan Young (Morgan), Tessa Huckaby Frohock (Kyle), Katie Young Curry (Scott), Will Young, Kelly Young Puckett (Mike), Zachary Young (Kaitlyn), Ginny Young, Philip Huckaby, Lana Huckaby Cooper (Steve), Annie Young; 11 greatgrandchildren and many friends. Born and raised in Lithonia, GA, the son of Tommy and Clara (Reagin) Young, Mr. Young was a long-time resident of Columbia, SC and he resided at the Asbury Care Center of Aldersgate Retirement Community in Charlotte, NC, the past four years. Growing up during the Great Depression, Mr. Young developed a strong work ethic, even delivering newspapers door-to-door as a 6-year-old boy for five cents a week. In his early years, he was the City of Lithonia Marble Champion and was a high school all-county basketball player. After graduating with honors from Lithonia High School in 1941, he enlisted in the Navy. He served as a Radarman on the USS Healy in World War ll. After the war, he attended Emory University on the GI Bill, working his way through school as a shoe salesman and graduating in 1949 with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration. He married Ethel Morgan in 1947. After his military service, and after receiving his degree from Emory University, Mr. Young was employed by Dunn &Bradstreet Co., Joel Hurt Co., Warner Robbins AFB, and Burroughs Corp. JT and Ethel lived in Macon, GA, Jackson, MS, Shreveport, LA, , and Decatur, GA before moving to Columbia, SC in 1959 where they lived for 54 years. Following his employment with Burroughs, Mr. Young established his own business in 1968, Accounting Specialties. Mr. Young loved his wife and family, his church, and his friends. Some of his favorite times were spent with family at reunions and annual beach trips. Actively involved at Calvary Baptist Church, Columbia, SC, for over 50 years, JT participated in Sunday School, served as a deacon and church treasurer, served on various committees, and participated in the Men's Brotherhood. Mr. Young was an avid reader, a strong advocate of education, and he loved music, especially hymns. History, sports, and "all things Georgia" were his favorite topics for discussion. Friends and family lovingly said his mind was like a steel trap since he paid such attention to detail and he rarely forgot anything. The funeral homes serving the family are Robertson Funeral Home in Charlotte, NC and Henry Funeral Home in Lithonia, GA. A graveside service will be held 1 o'clock Saturday, February 18 at Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery, 6910 S. Goddard Rd., Lithonia, GA. The family will receive visitors Saturday February 18, from 11 o'clock until noon at Henry Funeral Home, 6833 Church St., Lithonia, GA, and a reception will follow the graveside service. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 4 at 11:00 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Columbia, SC. The family will receive guests at the church at 10:00 a.m. as well as after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 500 S. Kilbourne Rd., Columbia, SC, 29205.
