Obituary

Irvin Rodney (Rod) Goins II of Stone Mountain, GA passed away on August 23, 2020 after a short, yet courageous battle with cancer. He was born on April 13, 1964 in Bluefield, WV and was preceded in death by his father, Irvin Rodney Goins. Rod was a graduate from William Byrd High School and Virginia Polytechnical Institute and State University. While attending Virginia Tech, he was a member of the ROTC Corps of Cadets graduating second in command with the rank of Cadet Lieutenant Colonel. Left to cherish his memories is his soul mate, love of his life, and husband of over 25 years, David (Dave) Rogers. He also leaves behind his mother, Donita Goins, a sister, Sherrie Gardner, and younger brother, Kevin Goins (Kellie). Rod was a very proud uncle to Shawn Gardner (Marissa), Clay Gardner, Hunter Goins, Andrew Goins, Connor Goins, and a special niece, Evie Smith (Jerry). Rod was blessed with a giving and loving heart and was very involved with his nephews and niece and his love for them was obvious to anyone who would speak with him. He was an advocate for human equality and actively served on various boards on both local and state level. Rod led a full life in his short 55 years and especially enjoyed traveling with Dave, spending time with family, and anything dealing with his beloved Hokies. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital in Atlanta and Houston Methodist Hospital for their exceptional care for Rod. Due to the current COVID 19 pandemic a celebration of his life will be planned at a later date.
