Hoke S. Freeman Jr., age 68, of Conyers, passed away Wednesday, July 5, 2017. A loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend, he was known to many as "Smokin' Hoke". He graduated from East Atlanta High School in 1968 then served in the National Guard and was a member of Zingara Masonic Lodge. One of his proudest accomplishments was his work with the Georgia State Patrol. He started with the State Patrol in 1971 as a shop keeper. In 1973 he graduated from the 43rd Patrol School. He went on to serve at Post 37 in Lawrenceville, Post 46 in Conyers, executive security and Post 48 in Atlanta. On July 1, 1983 he was detached to the Metro Atlanta Fugitive Squad, where he remained until he retired as a Master Trooper in December 2000. After retirement he found joy in cooking his famous Bar B-Que, fried onions and potatoes. He will be remembered for his infectious smile, larger than life personality, practical jokes, bumper stickers, and his loving generous heart. Many will remember the yearly Thanksgiving Eve cookouts. To know him was to love him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hoke and Connie Freeman. Surviving are his loving wife of 30 years Tammie Freeman; daughters, Traci Upchurch and husband Joey, of Jackson, Carrie Sanders and husband Chad, of McDonough, Brittany Cushing and husband Micah, of Conyers, sister Connie Swaim and husband Denzel, of Snellville; brothers, Fred and wife Beverly of Loganville, Holman Freeman of Atlanta; grandchildren, Katelyn Griffin and husband Cory, Baylen, Macklin, Ayden, Asher, Jordan, Micah, Bryar and Easton; several nieces and nephews and countless friends. A Celebration of Life will be held 3 o'clock Saturday, July 8, at The First Baptist Church of Conyers, 2100 Highway 138 NE, Conyers, GA. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0308.
