Henrietta Louise Mize Cowan, a life-long resident of Lithonia, Georgia, died September 28, 2024, at the age of 96.
Beginning her career at Sears & Roebuck in Atlanta, she lovingly took a break to raise her children before later returning to the workforce, eventually retiring from John H. Harland Co. Her hobbies included eating, especially fried chicken and catfish, hymn singing and making conversation. She found great joy in being involved in various groups at local churches, where she cultivated an extended family of cherished friends. Henrietta was a lifetime member of Macedonia Baptist Church and was recently able to attend its 200th anniversary celebration as the oldest member of the congregation.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 66 years in 2014, Thornton Cowan; as well as her son-in-law, David Kennedy; and daughter-in-law, LuAnn Cowan. Survivors include her children, Dean (Ginger) Cowan of Griffin, Van (Cheryl) Cowan of Grayson, Celene (Eddie) Kennedy of Conyers, Katrina Cowan of McDonough; grandchildren, Christopher & Katie Cowan, Ashley & Brent Crabb, Lindsay & Blake Bridges; great-grandchildren, Rylee, Sadie, Elise, Barrett & Callan; nieces, nephews and extended family.
A funeral service will be held 11 o'clock, Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at the chapel of Henry Funeral Home, 6833 Church St., Lithonia, with Dr. Jim Martin officiating and interment following in Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday morning beginning at 10 o'clock at the funeral home.
