Obituary

Hazel Vivian McWilliams Shelnutt was born September 24, 1926 at home on Vanoy Street in East Atlanta. She moved to her Grandfather White's property in Lithonia when she was 5 years old. Hazel attended Murphy Candler School and Lithonia High School. After graduation, she attended comptometer school and went to work at Southern Bell in September 1943. She retired in May 1969. Hazel joined Macedonia Baptist Church and was baptized in August 1941. She served the church as pianist, Sunday School teacher and wrote the history of Macedonia Baptist in 1998 for the church's 175th anniversary. She was active at Young at Heart, Care & Share and Circle of Love. Hazel married Howard Shelnutt in July 1968 and became stepmother to Jimmy, David, Cathy and Sandra. Howard and Hazel had a son, Mark William Shelnutt in August 1969. Howard passed in January 1974 and Mark passed in July 2003. Hazel enjoyed a full life as a wife, mother and friend to many. She enjoyed her cats, gospel music, gardening, church activities, and singing at local nursing homes with her friends. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family. In addition to Howard and Mark, she was predeceased by her mother, Ollie White McWilliams in August 1978, father, William (Bill) McWilliams in January 1981, brother Paul McWilliams in April 1984, son, Jimmy Shelnutt in 1999, and great grandson, Corbett Studdard in 2011. She is survived by daughters and their spouses, Cathy and Joe Page, Sandra and Marty George, son, David Shelnutt, Jimmy's wife, Pat Shelnutt, 10 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by nephew, Mike McWilliams, nephew, Danny and JoAnn McWilliams and their children and grandchildren. A graveside service will be held 2 o'clock, Monday, January 25, 2021 at Macedonia Baptist Church with Dr. Jim Martin officiating. The family will receive friends from 1-1:45 pm at Henry Funeral Home prior to the service.
