George Robert Wells, lifelong resident of Lithonia, Georgia, died peacefully on March 5, 2026, at the age of 83, with his family by his side. He was born on August 21, 1942 to George Robert and Bertha Mae Lackey Wells, the youngest of eleven children. George attended Lithonia High School where he excelled in athletics and lettered in four sports. After his graduation in 1960, he joined the Local Union 72 as a pipefitter and recently received the special recognition of becoming a 65-year member.
George had a cheerful personality and notable sense of humor that endeared him to many. Coaching Little League sports when his children were young and family beach trips were highlights for him. Additionally he enjoyed completing Sudoku and Jumble puzzles in his spare time. Being "Da" to all his grand-girls brought him immense joy and was perhaps his most treasured role. He was actively involved at First Baptist Church of Lithonia, where he faithfully served as a sound technician for many years. One of his meaningful ministries was delivering recordings of church services to shut-ins so they could remain connected to their church family.
Preceding him in death were his parents and ten siblings: Emory, Daniel, Dennard, Larry, Joseph, Alice, Ruth, Jewel, Betty, and Jean.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Janie Howell Wells; daughter and son-in-law, Stacy and Otis Ingram; sons and daughters-in-law, Keith and Loni Wells, Kevin and Julie Wells; granddaughters, Jennifer Ingram, Kristin Johnson (Greer), Megan McVay (Sean), Laura Wells, and Joy Wells; as well as his great-granddaughter, Harper Ingram. He is also remembered by numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
A funeral service to honor George's life will be held 11 o'clock, Monday, March 9, at the First Baptist Church of Lithonia with Dr. Robert Lindsay and Dr. Jim Martin officiating. Interment will follow at Turner Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday, March 8, from 2-4 PM at Henry Funeral Home, Lithonia, and Monday preceding the service at the church, from 10-11 AM. Flowers are accepted, or contributions may be made in his memory to First Baptist Church of Lithonia, PO Box 378, Lithonia, GA 30058.
