Frances Ruth Sockwell, age 95, of Jefferson, died September 23, 2015. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Edgar Sockwell; son, Maurice Sockwell; and grandson, Greg Dixon. Frances is survived by her daughters, Evelyn Berner and husband, Robert, of Jefferson and Cindy Chumbler of Gainesville; grandchildren Sherry, Jimmy, Brandon, Season and Gabriel; great grandchildren, Jesse, Jacob, Drake, Oliver, Natalie, Margaret, and Austin. Frances had to quit school to help her family but she always had a desire to finish her education. At the age of 67, she earned her GED from the Dekalb County School System. The top officials from the Board of Education came to the school where she was working as a "lunchroom lady" to present her with her diploma. Frances' picture was hung in the state capital to honor her achievement and to be an example to others. A service will be held 11 o'clock Saturday in the Lithonia chapel of Henry Funeral Home with Rev. Jeff Clegg officiating. Interment will follow at Hillandale Memorial Park.
