Obituary

Faye Anderson Brooks of Columbia, SC, died Tuesday, August 18, 2020 from COVID-19 at age 92. She was born August 28, 1927, to Louise Couey Anderson and Rev. John Rogers Anderson in Albemarle, NC, where her father pastored a local United Methodist Church. Faye moved to Lithonia, GA with her mother and sister, Johnnie, after her father suffered a fatal heart attack. Faye met James Allen (Jimmy) Brooks while attending Lithonia High School and they married in 1946. Faye and Jimmy had three children: J. Anderson (Andy) Brooks (Sandie) of Lawrenceville, GA; Richard (Ricky) Brooks (Marjean) of Birmingham, AL; and Laura Nettles (Richard) of Blythewood, SC. At her death, Faye had seven grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and her spoiled little dog Tucker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy, in July, 1991. After 22 years as a stay-at-home mother, Faye began to work for American Peat & Organics, Inc. When the corporate office relocated to Walterboro, SC, she followed and eventually purchased the company in 1979. She served as president until her retirement. In Walterboro, she bought an abandoned pre-Civil War home and lovingly renovated it. Built in 1849, and one of the oldest homes in Colleton County, she fondly named it 'Bleubrooke.' Faye loved and devoted her life to her Lord, her family and her friends. She was very active in both community and church, especially in Walterboro where she lived for 40 years. She was a gifted pianist and sang in the church choir most of her life. She also played the organ at the Lithonia First United Methodist Church for 15 years. At Dogwood Hills Country Club in Walterboro, she entertained regulars with popular and big band tunes. In 2002, she self-published a book of her poetry called Musings, Music and Memories. For the last nine years, Faye lived in Columbia, SC, at Still Hopes Retirement Community. She was known for her friendliness as well as her gift of music, often playing for the residents as well as those in the skilled care unit. Recently, while counting the songs she knew by heart, she stopped when she reached 50 "in her repertoire." She was also an avid Atlanta Braves fan, watching every game for almost 30 years. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 o'clock, Saturday, August 22, at Hillandale Memorial Park with Dr. Jim Martin officiating. Memorial contributions may be sent to Bethel United Methodist Church (355 Hampton St. Walterboro, 29488; walterborobethelumc.org) or to Daniel Cason Music Camps for underprivileged children in Birmingham, AL. (538 7th Street N, Birmingham, AL 35203; danielcason.org).
