Elmer Lee Gooch, 85, of Conyers, Georgia, died June 9, 2024. Born on November 28, 1938, in Lumpkin County, Georgia, Mr. Gooch was a loyal, strong, caring and compassionate family man, known and respected by many. He served his country in U.S. Army and went on to work for Weyerhaeuser, where he retired after 35 years of dedicated service, never missing a single day of work. A star football player at Lithonia High School, Elmer carried his love for sports throughout his life, becoming a legendary coach for countless children, including his own in every sport they played. His dedication was not only limited to his work, but also to his hobbies, as he, along with his wife, were State Archery Champions. A respectful hunter and lover of the outdoors, Elmer was also an avid golfer. Above all, he was a family man, deeply committed to his wife and children. His family was his pride and joy, and nothing mattered to him more. He also loved his church family at Grace Baptist Church in Porterdale. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Emma Lou Gooch; and sister, Lillian Beasley. Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, Diane Gooch; his children, Sammy Lee (Cathy) Gooch, Ricki Ray, Michelle Gooch; grandchildren, Hiedi (Ahmad Bush) Gooch, Carly Gooch, Cody Cain, Dylan Gooch, William Ray, Hunter Cain; great-grandchildren, Zachary Lee Gooch, Cebastian Bush, Charleston Bush; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members. A funeral service will be held 11 o'clock, Thursday, June 13, 2024, at Grace Baptist Church, 474 Crowell Rd., Porterdale, with Pastor Philip Lehman officiating. Interment will follow in Eastlawn Memorial Park, 640 McGarity Rd., McDonough. The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 12, from 4-8 PM at Henry Funeral Home, 6833 Church Street, Lithonia, GA.
