Dorothy Jean Whittington Sager passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family and friends on January 22, 2024.
She was born January 10, 1932, in Crystal Springs, Mississippi to Quitman Whittington and Mary Leone Dalton Whittington. The family then moved to Cleveland, Mississippi where she spent most of her childhood.
After graduating from Cleveland High School, Jean was employed as a telephone operator for Southern Bell Telephone Company. It was around this time she was introduced to Jay Sager by a mutual friend. Jay knew immediately that Jean was the one for him stating, "I'm going to marry that girl." Jean and Jay were married in Cleveland, Mississippi on December 21, 1953.
They moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 1954 and later settled in Snellville, Georgia where they raised their four children. Jean and Jay were ham radio enthusiasts and long-time members of the Gwinnett Amateur Radio Society spending many weekends volunteering at events and activities. Jean enjoyed gardening, baking, listening to Elvis and Alan Jackson, and candy making as well as spending time with her family and traveling to Cleveland, Mississippi for vacations. She was especially proud of all of her grandchildren who lovingly referred to her as their "Nanny" and found great joy in being a part of their day-to-day activities. She was an avid reader and would spend hours working jigsaw puzzles as well as crossword puzzles.
She leaves behind her daughter Marihelen Bailey and her husband, Kenneth; her son Michael Sager, Sr. and his wife, Kathy; her son Bill Sager, and her son Terry Sager and his wife, Susan as well as her grandchildren: Michael Sager, Jr. and his wife Jacqueline and their daughters Kinsley Elizabeth and Jaylynn Jean; Steven Sager and Kerry Thuman and their daughter Abbey Grace; Keith Sager and his wife Jessica and their children Landyn, Reagan, Turner and Liam; Emily Sager and her children Tylen, Oliver and baby due in February; Sammi Jo Sager; Andrew Sager and his wife Alyssa; and Rebecca Sager.
A funeral service for Jean will be held 2 o'clock, Sunday, January 28, 2024, in the chapel of Henry Funeral Home, Lithonia with Pastor Brent Ross officiating and interment following in Hillandale Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5-7 PM, Saturday, January 27, 2024.
