Charles Gerald New, age 94, of Covington, Georgia, passed away June 4, 2025. He was born to the now late Charles H. New and Mary Elizabeth Haygood New in Lithonia, Georgia, and there remained a lifelong resident until his recent move to Covington. Charles was retired from GMC after 30 years of dedicated service at their Doraville, Georgia plant. A devoted Christian, Charles was a faithful follower of God and member of Turner Hill Baptist Church. He enjoyed his garden and being able to share all his vegetables with his friends. Charles and his wife, Barbara, enjoyed traveling and visited many places and made lots of friends throughout the years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the love of his life, Barbara Ann Almand New; son, Jerry New; sister, Louise Smith; brothers, William New, G.W. New (Christine); nephew, Keith McBroom; niece, Elaine New.
He is survived by his grandchildren, Harold New (Liberty), Nia Pairer (Dustin); 3 great-grandchildren; brother, Douglas New (Linda); sister, Mary Ellen McBroom; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral service to honor Charles' life will be held 1 o'clock, Friday, June 6, in the chapel of Henry Funeral Home, 6833 Church Street, Lithonia, with Rev. Lee Broadnax and Rev. Lanny Myers officiating and interment following in Turner Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Brian McBroom, Tommy Reese, Ronnie Reese, Russell New, Jerry Ragsdale and Nick Deaton will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday two hours prior to the service, from 11-1. Flowers are accepted, or contributions in his memory may be made to the church or charity of one's choice.
