Obituary

On July 26, 2021, a most gentle, loyal, and resourceful soul--Charles Wesley Jarvis--transitioned into everlasting love, peace, and rest with God and within our hearts. Born in Atlanta to Mary Gladys (Rice) Jarvis and George Louis Jarvis, Sr. on December 2, 1942, bright blue-eyed Wesley spent his adventuresome childhood enjoying the great outdoors and developing many practical skills, a strong work ethic, and a spiritual grounding from his parents and grandparents. He particularly admired his craftsman maternal grandfather who built his own house (the first around with electricity!), his spirited paternal grandmother who was a minister and artist, and his natural health-minded father who was a trainer for the early Atlanta Crackers baseball team. Not coincidentally, Wesley eventually designed and built his latest residence himself; maintained lifelong attendance and service to Gracepointe Nazarene Church in Loganville (formerly Atlanta First Church of the Nazarene) in such capacities as sound engineering and groundskeeping; and appreciated beauty in the natural world and many fun seasons of Atlanta Braves baseball. Upon graduation from Murphy High School in 1962, Wesley joined the Air National Guard, attaining the rank of Sergeant, and soon began dating Valerie Ann (Culotta) Jarvis, a sweetheart and Jacksonville, FL, native he met through church. He and Valerie married in 1968 and were blessed with daughter Kellie Ann Jarvis (Divis) of Macon. Wesley settled into a nearly 40-year-long career as Senior Storekeeper with Georgia Power Company, managing vast amounts and types of materials needed each day by the lineman crews. The "Lot Possum" and "Boss Man" was certainly always clever and efficient! He amazed others with his problem-solving ability and craftmanship. In retirement, Wesley has been beloved Grandpaw to his three young grandchildren, always available for laughter and comfort. With a warm smile, he continued to volunteer his time, many talents, and other resources regularly to his family, friends, former coworkers, and church community--and rarely made distinctions among these groups when humbly and calmly offering his generous, competent help in many forms. Of particular note has been his hand in the design, installation, and ongoing maintenance of his church's Prayer Garden, a place for remembrance and a source of peace. He also organized a weekly church workday and a monthly Georgia Power retiree luncheon. Wesley demonstrated his love for God and others by being such a joyful doer throughout his 78 years. May we honor his precious life by recalling his example and beautiful spirit. Wesley is preceded in death by his father George Louis Jarvis, Sr. of Kentucky, his mother Mary Gladys (Rice) Jarvis, and his brother Seldon Rice Jarvis. Remaining are his treasured wife of 53 years, Valerie Ann (Culotta) Jarvis, and daughter Kellie Ann Jarvis Divis (Robert), and grandchildren Lila Eve Divis, Evan Robert Divis, and Zachary Alan Divis. Also remaining are several siblings who will miss "the brother who was always there": George Louis Jarvis, Jr. (Marcia), Shirley Geraldine (Jarvis) Ledford (Louis), Joel Harrison Jarvis (Mia), and Robert Craig Jarvis (Debbie). Wesley also enjoyed numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. The family will hold a private graveside service at Gordon Church in Royston where Wesley spent his meaningful childhood summers in the care of his grandparents. A public memorial service at Gracepointe Nazarene Church in Loganville will be announced at a later time.
