Carey Marbut Cameron, Jr. passed away December 27, 2017. He was born in Lithonia, GA, September 16, 1935. His parents were Carey Marbut Cameron, Sr. and Margaret Smith Cameron Summers. Carey lived in Stone Mountain, GA with his wife, the former Dorothy Jackson of Tift County. He is also survived by his brother, Frank Cameron, his son, Joel Cameron, daughter, Becky Jones, grandchildren, Brandi Cameron-Jacobson, Tyler Cameron and Brandon Jones, as well as two great grandchildren, Makenzi Rehonic and Kaden Jacobson.
Carey graduated from Decatur High School, Georgia Southwestern College and the University of Georgia. While attending UGA as a journalism major, he worked on the Red and Black newspaper and became a GA Bulldog fan for life. After graduation, Carey interned at the Atlanta Journal Constitution newspaper. He worked at other newspaper companies in SC, GA and FL. While working at the Tifton Gazette in Tifton, GA, he met and married his wife, Dorothy. They moved to Valdosta, GA where he held the position of south Georgia and north Florida Bureau Chief for the Florida Times Union newspaper out of Jacksonville.
Carey served 6 years in the Georgia Army National Guard where he was a Buck Sergeant - 3 stripes. He held the office of vice president in the Valdosta Jaycees, served as chairman of the State Outstanding Young Layman Award, appearing on Governor's Prayer Breakfast program. Carey was also a charter member of Valdosta-Lowndes YMCA Board, served on Valdosta-Lowndes Chamber of Commerce tourism and governmental affairs committee, and volunteered with the Cub Scouts.
Carey was a 1982 graduate of Woodrow Wilson College of Law and passed the bar that year. He graduated with a B average in the insurance law course which was the class' highest grade. He was a member of the State Bar of Georgia, American Bar Association, the Atlanta Bar and Gwinnett Bar Association. He worked as an assistant State court Solicitor of Gwinnett County and was an associate attorney with Robert A. Sneed and Associates of Lithonia, GA. After working at the Sneed firm, Carey opened his own law firm in Lithonia, and practiced there until he retired in 2011.
Carey was an avid reader and enjoyed watching and playing along to the Jeopardy game show. He delighted in watching UGA football and watching his grandson, Brandon Jones, race in the NASCAR Xfinity series. Most of all though, Carey enjoyed spending time with his family and group of friends dubbed "the McDonald Mafia".
A funeral service will be held 2 o'clock, Wednesday, January 3, 2018, in the chapel of Henry Funeral Home, with Rev. Leon Matthews officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 Tuesday evening at Henry Funeral Home, Lithonia.
