The feeling one gets upon seeing a casket is dramatic. It varies, depending on the individual, but, it makes an impact. It is based on preconceived notions, influenced by books, Hollywood, and our own imaginations.

The word “casket” comes to us from the French, it literally means “jewelry box”. This, ornate, wood or metal chest doesn’t hold mere gems or jewels, but our most precious possession, our loved one. We put our treasure in this chest, and we bury it, for safe keeping.

Christians believe in the bodily resurrection of the dead upon Christ’s return. So our body, is only held temporarily in this jewelry box. It’s not just a casket, it’s a time capsule.
